Limiting/Blocking Origin's Access To Your Computer

PostLimiting/Blocking Origin's Access To Your Computer by Jasperman

Total Banter Community - Battlefield 3 Server
With EA's EULA causing issues the safest way to use Origin is with a Sandbox.

"In computer security, a sandbox is a security mechanism for separating running programs. It is often used to execute untested code, or untrusted programs from unverified third-parties, suppliers and untrusted users." Wikipedia

EA have basically hidden their "I own your computer" clause deep down in varying user agreement documents, and thus stifling the shouting and anger at it. So lets just limit its access.

The problem is that we are allowing the program access. So using a Sandbox we will limit the program to access only what is needed.

Step 1) Download and install Origin Direct Download or Origin Homepage

Step 2) Download and install Sandboxie Direct Download (free version) or Sandboxie Homepage

Step 3) Creating a Sandbox
  • Open/Run Sandboxie.
  • From the Top Menu click Sandbox>Create New Sandbox.
  • Name the new Sandbox "Origin".
1.jpg

Step 3) Configuring the "Origin" Sandbox
  1. Creating The Text To Limit Access
    • Open Windows Command Prompt
    • Issue the command "cd C:\ProgramData" (move to the ProgramData folder)
    • Issue the command "dir /d" (List the ProgramData Sub-folders)
      2.jpg
      2.jpg (13.75 KiB) Viewed 55722 times
    • Copy the Folder List to a notepad (or similar)
      (Hint: in command prompt Right-Click and select "Mark" then click and drag over the area you wish to copy)
    • In Notepad remove ALL the "[" & "]" brackets.
    • Add "ClosedFilePath=C:\ProgramData\" before each folder.
    • Remove Origin & Electronic Arts (or any form of EA) From the list.
    • Allow it access to the C Drive by adding "OpenPipePath=C:\" to the end
    • Now lets Restrict Access To Your Other Hard Drives by adding a few lines to the notepad.
      For each Hard Drive add this line with the corresponding letter (dont add the C: Drive...)
      "ClosedFilePath=<Drive Letter>:\"
    • Origin Also Requires Access To Some "My Documents" Folders
      For Some Games to Run Origin will require access to My Documents Folders. This allows Origin to save settings and saved games. I will use BattleField 3 as an example. But you must do this for each game in origin.
      • Add "OpenPipePath=C:\Users\<User-Name>\Battlefield 3\" To the end of the text File.
      • Repeat for any other Origin Games installed. (OpenPipePath=C:\Users\<User-Name>\<Game Folder Name Here>\)
    • The notepad Should now look something Like this (keep this open in the background)
    3.jpg
  2. Origin Also Requires Access To Some "My Documents" Folders
    • Also Include the following lines
      Code: Select all
      OpenPipePath=C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Origin\
      OpenPipePath=C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Origin\
  3. Allowing Access To Web Browsers
    • Add to the bottom the following lines for your corresponding browser
      • Google Chrome
        Code: Select all
        OpenPipePath=C:\Users\<USER NAME HERE>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\
      • Mozilla Firefox
        Code: Select all
        OpenPipePath=C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
      • Internet Explorer
        Code: Select all
        OpenPipePath=C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\
  4. Lets Add this To Our Sandbox Settings
    • Go Back To Sandboxie and on the Top Menu go to Configure>Edit Configuration (agree to any admin access)
    • This Will open a new Notepad titled "Sandboxie.ini". Scroll To the Bottom.
    • Copy and Paste The notepad we just made to the bottom of this one.
    • Save and close "Sandboxie.ini"

    Your Sandbox is now Configured
    Sample ini File
    **************Under Construction**************
    Code: Select all
    [Origin]

    Enabled=y
    ConfigLevel=7
    AutoRecover=y
    Template=BlockPorts
    Template=LingerPrograms
    Template=Firefox_Phishing_DirectAccess
    Template=AutoRecoverIgnore
    RecoverFolder=%{various numbers}%
    RecoverFolder=%Personal%
    RecoverFolder=%Favorites%
    RecoverFolder=%Desktop%
    BorderColor=#00FFFF,ttl
    DropAdminRights=y
    ClosedFilePath=C:\ProgramData\Adobe
    ClosedFilePath=C:\ProgramData\......
    ClosedFilePath=E:\
    ClosedFilePath=F:\
    ClosedFilePath=G:\
    ClosedFilePath=H:\
    OpenPipePath=C:\
    OpenPipePath=C:\Users\<User-Name>\Battlefield 3\
    OpenPipePath=C:\Users\<USER NAME HERE>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\
    OpenPipePath=C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
    OpenPipePath=C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\

Step 4) Starting Origin in the SandBox
  • Right Click on the Sandbox you created "Sandbox Origin"
  • Go To Run Sandboxed>Run Any Program
  • Browse To where you installed Origin and select the Origin.exe (default "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin\Origin.exe")
    4.jpg
  • Origin is now running in the sandbox you created and has limited access to your data.

It Should Now look Something Like this
5.jpg

All working?? Join us Total Banter Community - Battlefield 3 Server

Notes:
You must run origin via the sandbox each time to prevent it gaining access. Do not forget to disable it from the startup or it will run without the sandbox.
Games MAY Need To Be Installed in a NON-Sandboxed environment. Please run Origin without sandboxie to install and quickly reload it into sandboxie after install

Any questions please feel free to post.
Any tips/improvements are welcome just PM me.

Apfelsator wrote:Here is how you run Battlefield 3 with origins working in the Sandbox:
First, do as Jasperman told in the first post.
Then you have to add the paths for battlefield into your sandboxie.ini as shown in my .ini.
Important ist that the sandbox gain access to both, all the origins related folders AND to your webbrowser.
It have to look like this in the end of your .ini(i'm not shure if you need to add the "DropAdminRights=y" line also):
OpenPipePath=P:\<NOTICE! instead of P:\ you need to add YOUR drive where you installed origins!>Games\Battlefield3-Origin\Origin
OpenPipePath=P:\<NOTICE! instead of P:\ you need to add YOUR drive where you installed Battlefield 3!>Games\Battlefield3-Origin\Origin Games\
OpenPipePath=C:\Users\<User>\My Documents\Battlefield 3\
OpenPipePath=C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Origin\
OpenPipePath=C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Origin\
OpenPipePath=C:\Program Files (x86)\Battlelog Web Plugins\
OpenPipePath=C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\

If you can't find the origin folders, search for them in the explorer.
Also very important(and for me it was the case of my problem) is that you DON'T add a "ClosedFilePath=C:\Program Files (x86)\" line for your webbrowser, handle the browser folder how Jasperman describe the handling of the origins folder.

Last step is that you also let your browser run in the SAME sandbox as origins is running, otherwise origins and the battlelog-shit can not communicate and the game will not start.
If you have done this, it should look like this:
Image

The only thing you now have to do is to open the battlelog site in your webbrowser manually(it means DO NOT click the start button in origins).
After this, just log in with your account and play the game.

I think this will also work for the other origin games from EA but as i don't have any other, i do not know it for 100%.

Have fun, i hope i could help as many as possible.

PLEASE SPREAD THIS TO EVERY SITE WHERE THE PROBLEM WITH ORIGINS IS MENTIONED!

Will be updated and layout fixed during the weekend. <3 Jasperman
